Upper West Side Residence

Project Type: Gut Renovation
Location: West End Ave
Year: 2020
Size: 1250 sq-ft

This complete gut-renovation of a 1928 Upper West Side apartment took a space that was renovated in the previous owner’s unique style, and turned it into a contemporary luxury home. Every every square foot of space is maximized, with more natural light coming in than ever before.

mgd designed the perfect apartment for the dinner parties the family loves to host.

From 1970s Disco to Sophisticated 2020 living

Sometimes the current condition of an apartment can be intimidating, and sometimes it can be fun. This disco-themed apartment with curved pink walls, zebra carpet and two built-in hot tubs took a lot of vision to reimagine, but was transformed into a luxury two-bed, two-bath with character and sophistication.

With mdg, its all about the clients lifestyle and aesthetic - maximizing your space so you can get the most out of it. This young family was expecting their first child and wanted a space they could be together whether it was for a meal or while playing and relaxing in the living space. They also love to throw dinner parties and the husband considers himself an amateur chef!

mdg was able to reimaging the floor plan and opened up the kitchen to the living and dining spaces, open the wall to the nursery allowing for more natural light, find space for 21 additional linear feet of closets, and turn a small bathroom with a miniature bathtub into a full ADA compliant layout.

The kitchen was designed specifically for dinner parties, moving the stovetop to the island and the built-in bar, so the owners could hang out with friends while preparing fabulous meals for their guests.

The features that make this home unique are all about opening the space and bringing in the natural light

Open Kitchen with Cook Top Peninsula and Integrated Bar: Opening the pre-war classic galley kitchen was the first obvious step, but designing the space so the family could most enjoy it was the fun part of the project. The stove is on the peninsula facing the dining room, and the integrated bar anchors the space with contrasting black marble, and custom shelves lined with bronze-etched mirror adding a sense of luxury and fun.

Integrated storage design creates light and flow: White custom cabinetry lines most of the hallways and blends in with the surrounding context. mdg designed the space to align hallways, ceilings, and lights all around the storage components so it was seamlessly integrated into the space.

Blackened Steel Door: This apartment needed to capture more natural light, so mdg opened the wall between the living room and secondary bedroom and placed this architectural design element that allowed more light to flow through the front of the apartment without compromising privacy with an optional blackout shade and sealed edges. When open, the glass door now allows the natural light in the living room and bedroom that fills the spaces for longer periods of the day.

Private Primary Suite: The primary suite is the definition of smart design. It is hidden behind a sliding door that resembles the wall to make the ultimate private area. Behind the sliding door, the bathroom was placed at the opposite side from the bedroom with the walk-in closet in between. The primary bathroom was intelligently crafted for maximum comfort: the shower door that swings in both directions, the shower head was put behind the shower door while the controls are in front of the shower door and there is a towel hook above the bench. You can turn the water on to heat, and hang your towel inside without getting sprayed with cold water - its a beautiful way to start the day!
