UWS Open Concept Kitchen
Project Type: Pre-War Kitchen/Bathroom/Living Area Renovation
Location: Upper West Side
Year: 2021
Size: 1,100 sqft
A Pre-War galley kitchen that was completely closed off is opened up to create a dynamic space, incorporating the living room and a new extraordinary 20ft long counter with fluted wood cabinets.
This family lived in the apartment for 40 years and always dreamed of doing this renovation. Now they have the space they always wanted and finally can host their family for many holidays and celebrations to come!
This closed kitchen separated the family. Opening it brought life back to the party
The owners always wanted a home where they could enjoy their family and friends. With the coming of their new grandson it was finally time.
mdg was able to take a small, cramped, closed-off galley kitchen and create a huge peninsula with room for bar seating directly across from the stove top which features an in-counter telescopic exhaust vent.
Opening up the kitchen seemed like a straightforward task but given how tight the space was, and all the challenges with existing plumbing and electrical risers, this became a much more technical and precise kitchen renovation than expected.
The aesthetic in the kitchen is clean, white cabinetry without any visible hardware. This allowed the peninsula and bar to be the main design feature. From the view of the living room, fluted cabinets run the full length of the space starting under the television, as a fully functioning built-in media console and storage space, then curving underneath the stone countertop behind making space for the bar seating. It’s a impressive addition to this warm and inviting space.
We did several mock ups and material tests to ensure the curve worked with the fluting. The rich wood panels below the countertop create a beautiful contrast to the white quartz on top.
