mdg engineered a custom light fixture that is higher quality and less expensive than the designer option

SITUATION

The design team specified a beautiful, designer light fixture that would elongate the entry hallway through the length of the apartment (almost 60ft!) in an effort to tie together several spaces and accent the spectacular size and length of the apartment.

CHALLENGE

The available light fixtures that would achieve the design intent were not readily available and were much more expensive than expected.

The cost of the light fixture was approximately $20,000-$25,000 which would double the budget for the light fixtures (this is not even include installation).

SOLUTION

Using readily available aluminum extrusions and lights, mdg worked with the installers and GC to engineer a light that would match the specified fixture and could be easily installed.  This solution achieved a high-end look but was more flexible and appropriate than the off-the-shelf designer product.

The custom light was actually pre-fabricated prior to installation then hoisted into place with 13 men all in one shot!

IMPACT

The individual light fixtures in the overall assembly were actually more functional than the original light because they had two functions:

(1) they can remain recessed and appear very minimal and sleek

(2) they can also extend and articulate to act as spot lights to illuminate artwork.

This saved the owner approximately $12,000 with an even better solution in the end!
