How mdg design and engineering expertise saved wow-factor custom wine storage
$35,000
SAVED
SITUATION
The client had a spectacular wine collection and mdg used what would otherwise be an awkwardly placed column as the location the wine storage. MDG designed a wow-factor frameless glass wine storage unit which both maintained the open-concept layout and kept their kitchen and dining spaces connected.
CHALLENGE
In pursuing this feature, we found the initial costs were significantly higher than expected, and higher than the client was willing to pay. The show-stopping element of the design was at risk of being eliminated due to cost.
mdg looked for creative solutions so the owners didn’t have to sacrifice their vision due to budget constraints.
SOLUTION
The original design included an off-the-shelf system from a standard wine storage manufacturer which was expensive to purchase and complicated/costly to install.
Through the design, engineering and construction expertise of the team, and with our creativity and dedication, mdg was able to value-engineer this feature to reduce the budget.
We engineered new wine hanging system comprised of standard retail signage cables rather than bulky and expensive wine racks. Our design team created a physical mock-up as a guide and trained the field crew how to install it.
Additionally, mdg designed a custom HVAC system, optimized for the small space, to ensure the wine was kept at the perfect temperature.
IMPACT
The wine storage design is stunning! It illuminates the apartment from the center, creating a sense of warmth and sophistication for the family and their guests.
This feature ended up being the best part of the project, and if it wasn’t for mdg’s expertise, know-how, and dedication it would have been lost!
The final custom solution with the custom glass and HVAC system, and off-the-shelf retail materials, saved the owner nearly $35,000 compared to the standard, bulky wine storage option.
